How the US Progressive Federal Income Tax System Works

The United States utilizes a graduated progressive income tax system. Rather than taxing your entire income at one flat rate, income is divided into tiers ("brackets"), and each tier is taxed at its own corresponding rate (10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37%).

Marginal Rate vs. Effective Rate

A common misconception is that moving into a higher tax bracket (e.g., from 12% to 22%) lowers your take-home pay. In reality, only the dollars earned above the bracket threshold are taxed at the higher marginal rate. Every dollar earned below that threshold remains taxed at the lower rates (10% and 12%), resulting in an effective tax rate that is substantially lower than your top marginal bracket.

Frequently Asked Questions About US Income Taxes

Should I take the Standard Deduction or Itemize?
Over 88% of US taxpayers claim the standard deduction because it is simpler and frequently higher than their deductible expenses. You should only itemize deductions if your qualified deductions (such as mortgage interest, state and local taxes up to $10,000, and charitable donations) exceed your standard deduction threshold.
How do pre-tax contributions lower my tax liability?
Pre-tax contributions to traditional 401(k) plans, 403(b) accounts, and Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) reduce your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) dollar-for-dollar, shielding that income from taxation at your highest marginal tax bracket.
