How Your Paycheck Is Taxed in 2026
Three layers of tax come out of most US paychecks. Federal income tax uses the 2026 IRS brackets (10% to 37%) after the standard deduction — $16,100 for single filers and $32,200 for married filing jointly. FICA payroll taxes fund Social Security (6.2% on wages up to $184,500 in 2026) and Medicare (1.45% on all wages, plus an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000 for single filers). State income tax ranges from 0% in the nine states that do not tax wages to a top rate of 13.3% in California.
Example: on an $85,000 salary in Texas (no state income tax), a single filer takes home about $68,627.50 in 2026 — $9,870 federal tax and $6,502.50 FICA, an effective rate of 19.3%. The same salary in California keeps noticeably less because of state tax — pick your state in the calculator or from the list below.

Frequently Asked Questions About Paychecks
How do I calculate my take-home pay?
Enter your gross annual salary, filing status and state. The calculator subtracts 2026 federal income tax (IRS brackets after the standard deduction), FICA payroll taxes (Social Security 6.2% up to $184,500 of wages, Medicare 1.45% plus 0.9% above the threshold) and your state income tax using official 2026 state rates, brackets, standard deductions and exemptions. Pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) contributions reduce your federal and state taxable income.
What is the difference between gross pay and net pay?
Gross pay is your salary before any deductions. Net (take-home) pay is what reaches your bank account after federal, state and payroll taxes and any pre-tax deductions like 401(k) contributions or health insurance premiums. On an $85,000 salary in a no-income-tax state, take-home pay in 2026 is about $68,628 — an effective tax rate of about 19.3%.
Are paycheck calculators accurate?
This calculator uses 2026 IRS federal brackets, the SSA 2026 Social Security wage base ($184,500) and Tax Foundation 2026 state tax tables, so it is a close estimate for most employees. Your actual paycheck can differ because of local income taxes, employer-specific deductions, tax credits, or W-4 settings such as extra withholding. Treat results as planning estimates, not tax advice.
Which states have no income tax?
In 2026, nine states do not tax wage income: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. Workers in these states still pay federal income tax and FICA taxes. Washington taxes large capital gains, but not wages.
